ATVs are designed to perform well, especially in muddy conditions. For those of us who've experienced mudding on all-terrain vehicles, nothing else compares. In this post, we'll cover the best way to prepare you and your quad for optimal performance and fun. Interstate Cycles is your local dealer for new and pre-owned ATVs. Install a Winch

Winches are one of the most valuable tools to own for ATV-enthusiasts. Consider investing in one if you're ATV doesn't already have a winch installed on it. For example, you can pull yourself out of many messy situations by hooking the winch line to a tree.

Adjust the Radiator

To prevent overheating, consider moving the radiator from above the front rack on your ATV. This simple adjustment prevents the radiator from getting clogged up with dirt and mud, as well. Another option is to tape up the body to prevent mud from entering the radiator.

Seal the Airbox

Just like the radiator, it's essential to keep water and mud from entering your airbox. To seal the airbox, check the top of the airbox down to the engine's intake to make sure water can't enter. If you plan on mudding regularly, a snorkel kit might be a good investment, as they come equipped with air intakes and outlet exhausts that protect internal components.

Lube Up Your ATV

Before heading out:

  1. Review all your ATV electrical components.
  2. Regularly apply a coating of dielectric grease to prevent wear and tear caused by muddy and wet conditions.
  3. Before applying the lubricant, unplug your connector and plug back in once you're finished.

Aside from electric components, pistons and bearings will benefit from a regular lube coating. If you can't find specific dielectric grease, WD-40 works great and can be found just about anywhere.

Final Preperations

Lastly, you'll want to check your attire. Apart from the fun, mudding on an ATV can get quite dirty and wet. If you have nice ATV accessories, you may want to keep those at home. Bring only the bare essentials, if possible. For example, consider not donating those old jeans or boots to goodwill, as they make great a clothing option for weekend mudders. You certainly don't want to ditch your helmet and gloves, though.

Bring along a first aid kit and trash bags to put your muddy clothes in after you're finished.
