Motorcycle Safety
There's nothing like the freedom and independence one feels when riding a motorcycle. But on some level, everyone knows that there is an inherent risk in riding, just as there is an inherent risk in driving a car. The problem is, the stakes are much higher without airbags and seat belts to keep you safe.
Here at Interstate Cycles, we value the safety of our customers, so we've developed this short list of safety suggestions that could help you avoid getting in an accident. At our Lake City, Florida location we offer the best parts and service so that you can have faith in your bike when you get out on the road. Remember, this guide is not meant to replace an actual motorcycle training or state-sponsored certification course.
Inspect Your Bike Before You Ride
Inspecting your bike before you ride should become a habit. Walk all the way around your bike and take note of every part. Check the air pressure in your tires, and make sure all your lights are functioning properly. Look under your bike for any fluid leaks, and test your brakes to make sure they function. The more you do this, the more attuned to your bike you'll become, and the more quickly you'll be able to spot something that's amiss when it eventually arises. Conversely, the more you slack on these duties, the more likely you are to take off down the road with a dangerously under-inflated tire or non-functioning brake light, and that's where the trouble starts.
Purchase the Proper Equipment
The right gear could be the difference between life and death or severe injury. The most important piece of gear for a motorcycle rider is the helmet. You might be tempted to make quick trips without a helmet, or to buy a cheap helmet. If you get in a crash, though, you'll regret not having made the investment. Many people also elect to wear riding gear over the top of their normal clothes in order to offer some protection from road debris and also provide a layer of protection in case of a skid. Leather is a popular choice, but it doesn't ventilate as well as some synthetic materials. Having decent riding clothes can save you from road rash.
Awareness
According to the Hurt Study, the most comprehensive study of motorcycle accidents in the United States, approximately two-thirds of motorcycle crashes that didn't involve another vehicle were due to operator error. That means two-thirds of crashes not involving another car were preventable. Keeping your wits about you is the best defense you have against a crash. If you don't get distracted and don't push past your skill level as a rider, you'll already be much less likely to get into an accident.
Watch the Weather
The biggest problem for most motorcycle riders is rain, which can come and go seemingly whenever it wants. It's hard to perfectly predict the weather, so it's best to keep rain gear in your saddlebag to make sure you have protection should the weather turn. On the other hand, riding under the hot sun can present its own problems. Make sure to bring water and don't allow yourself to get dehydrated, which reduce your judgment and cause many problems with your riding.
Stay Sober
One of the simplest things you can do if you want to stay safe while riding is making a decision to never drink or take drugs before riding. Drunk driving is one of the leading causes of motorist death. Staying sober before riding includes more than just not drinking or smoking drugs. It also means staying away from prescription drugs that have psychoactive compounds. Don't take opiates or muscle relaxers or any other drug that could slow your reaction time or affect your judgment.
Keeping these basics in mind will help you stay safe under even the worst of conditions. Taking shortcuts when it comes to your safety is never a good idea, especially not when you're on a motorcycle where every small mistake is punished much more severely.
