The humble utility terrain vehicle or UTV, also known as a side-by-side, is an extremely versatile and useful vehicle. You can ride UTVs for fun with your family on a nature trail, or you can transport your workers and their tools to a job site. There are so many ways to use UTVs, in fact, that you might be surprised to learn just what you can do with them. Here are just a few of the more common uses of UTVs.

1. Road Driving

If you outfit your UTV with street-legal accessories like road tires and a light bar, and you get it registered to use on public thoroughfares, you can drive it on the street! Bear in mind that this isn’t legal in every jurisdiction, so you’ll want to do some research. Many people do use UTVs to drive on both public streets as well as private paved areas, such as airport tarmacs, warehouses, campuses, and private neighborhoods.

2. Property Surveillance

Own a large parcel of land? It’s hard to maintain an acreage when you have to traverse it on foot, but if you’ve got a UTV, you can quickly drive around your property and make sure everything is ship-shape. Being able to keep tabs on the condition of your property helps to ensure your security and save you time on maintenance.

3. Building or Road Construction

Construction workers of all stripes make regular use of UTVs in their work. UTVs are compact and small enough to fit into tight worksites where a pickup truck would simply be too big and unwieldy. Also, UTVs can have high hauling capacities that allow them to use certain types of tools and tow trailers full of loose material around. You can also use a UTV to take clients or workers through the mud to let them closely examine part of the worksite up close without having to get their shoes dirty.

4. Going Hunting

You can’t hunt from the UTV itself, but you can use it to drive into the forest with all your gear in tow. UTVs make great hunting transportation, since you can install a gun rack and make use of the cargo bay for storing equipment. Attaching a winch to the front can allow you to pull game out of a ditch, too.

5. Farm Tasks

Farmers and ranchers alike can make use of UTVs for a variety of small and large daily tasks. Carry feed or hay to your animals, transport manure or soil to fields, haul sand or gravel to level out a driveway, or simply get to a distant corner of your land much faster. UTVs make excellent farm and ranch transport!
